I spend a lot of time walking along Lake Michigan, noticing how the surface changes—lines in the sand, water moving in and out, and the marks left behind as it recedes. Those observations show up here. The upper third and interior are finished in a soft cream colored glaze. It holds light in a quiet way—similar to overcast mornings or the pale brightness that sits on the water before the sun fully rises. The surface shifts slightly as you turn it in your hands. The lower two thirds is finished with a glaze that includes Lake Michigan beach sand. That material brings subtle texture and variation, grounding the piece and connecting it directly to the shoreline where the work begins. The lip of the mug is formed with hand-rolled coils that have been flattened. It reflects the lines left behind in the sand or the edges of small waves as they move across the surface. The handle is shaped to feel comfortable and secure in your hand. This is a mug made for everyday use.
